about

This piece was part of a very special project, Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada from March to August 2023.

Commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada, Resolute is a piece in response to Isabel McLaughlin's work Tree (1935).

About this movement:

Bold, beautiful and intimate in character, Resolute — written for solo viola and loop pedal — captures elements of the feminine spirit. Inspired by Isabel McLaughlin's work, Tree, it mirrors the painting’s verve through a sonic lens. Just as McLaughlin's work diverges from the artistic tradition established by the Group of Seven, Resolute showcases the artistic versatility of the viola as a solo voice, blending tradition and innovation through the use of a loop pedal and looping effects.

This piece was commissioned and recorded with support from the National Gallery of Canada.
